Garage sale, porch sale, yard sale, estate sale or moving sale – whatever you call it, selling your household’s unwanted items before moving makes sense for two reasons:
1. You will make some extra money that can be used to visit some of the local sights or restaurants in your new location.
2. You will reduce your moving bill by decreasing the amount of unwanted items that have to be packed and transported.
3. You won’t have to find a place to store all of those extra items in your new home!
Here are some tips to follow for a successful, hassle-free sale.
a Don’t hold your sale on a holiday weekend
a Don’t hold your sale in the winter or when inclement weather is predicted
a Select a Friday and Saturday for your sale, and the first weekend of the month is also a plus.
a Advertise your sale in Craig’s List and in a local newspaper. Include times, location and any collectibles or antiques.
a Post fliers at church, schools, grocery stores, and any place else that offers a free community bulletin board.
a Place signs in your yard and on street corners as long as they comply with local ordinances.
aPrice things realistically, and be prepared to bargain.
aHang clothing on hangers – makes it easier for the looker and for you.
aKeep only a small amount of money in your cash box for change.
aDecide beforehand if you want to take personal checks.
aDON’T ALLOW SHOPPERS INSIDE YOUR HOME
aDonate unsold clothing or other items to a local charity or homeless shelter; there could also be a tax deduction for you.
When it’s all over, enjoy the fruit of your sales activities; less things to move and extra money in your pocket.
